K mart Corp.: The Troy, Mich.-based discount retailer said second-quarter profit increased 2% to $148 million. Sales rose 11.1% to $7.78 billion. The company said competitive pricing and cost-control efforts, including a new computerized point-of-sale system, boosted results.
