Technological Breakthrough: Anaheim-based Odetics Inc., a maker of robots and recording systems for space applications, said it has received a patent for what it considers a breakthrough in space recorder technology.
Space recorders are tape machines used to record data collected by a satellite or spaceship for transmission back to Earth. Storing the data becomes important when a satellite is unable to transmit the information when it is received.
The patent applies to Odetics’ Active Tape-Tracking System, which can reduce tape wear by accurately positioning a magnetic head on the tape and winding the tape onto the recorder’s reels.
The system also increases the volume of data that can be stored on a given length of tape.
