‘Clear Thinking’ Is a Little Cloudy

Vlastos’ understanding of Socrates might be a little fuzzy on the topic of morals. Every age has special graces by which the grandeur of God’s creation becomes known. If Socrates had had the knowledge that the scientists of today have, such as scanning electron microscopes, he would have used his rational, critical intelligence to applaud life from its very beginnings. As the professor points out, Socrates had a suspicion of politics, felt his life’s mission was commanded by God to examine himself, was condemned unjustly, refused to retaliate and chose jail (even death) rather than submission to false piety. Seems like he would have made a great pro-life rescuer. For a man who studied at a theological seminary and read all of the great philosophers, I hope Prof. Vlastos has read and reflected on the life of Christ.
