Irvine Firm Agrees to Pay $65,000 Fine
An Irvine company has agreed to pay a $65,000 federal fine for illegally shipping hazardous waste to the same unauthorized disposal plant in Wyoming that Disneyland was penalized last month for utilizing.
Scientific Applications International Corp. also agreed in its settlement with the Environmental Protection Agency to develop new, legal procedures for disposing of its industrial waste.
Similar charges are still pending against four others: BFM Energy Products Corp. of Santa Ana, Exotic Materials Inc. of Costa Mesa, ROI Development Corp. of Newport Beach, and the city of Fontana. The companies and city all hauled toxic waste to a plant in Wyoming that cannot safely and legally dispose of it, EPA officials said.
Walt Disney Co. already paid a record-breaking $550,000 fine to settle the EPA’s case against Disneyland, which used the unauthorized plant for two years to dispose of paint and other hazardous waste.
