MAKEUP OF MULTINATIONAL FORCE

Here is the breakdown of forces committed to the Persian Gulf region:

UNITED STATES: At least 40,000 ground troops are already in Saudi Arabia and another 60,000 are en route. They include elements of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, the 24th Mechanized Infantry Division, the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade and the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment.

The American fleet in the region totals about 70 ships, including three aircraft carriers. There are 35,000 personnel aboard the ships.

The U.S. has 500 aircraft in the region. The Pentagon has sent 22 Stealth fighters.

FRANCE: It has expanded its force in the gulf region to seven ships, including the aircraft carrier Clemenceau with anti-tank helicopters, a guided-missile cruiser equipped with anti-ship Exocets and an Exocet-armed destroyer.

The government is sending one company of 180 paratroopers to the United Arab Emirates for reconnaissance. They are equipped for chemical warfare.

BRITAIN: The British, who have a flotilla permanently in the gulf, have contributed a destroyer armed with Sea Dart missiles, two frigates armed with Exocet missiles. Three minesweepers and four support vessels are on the way.

Britain has deployed a squadron (12 to 16 planes) of Tornado fighters in Saudi Arabia and another in Bahrain as well as a squadron of Jaguars in Oman.

SOVIET UNION: Moscow has sent a Udaloy-class destroyer armed with surface-to-air missiles and a support ship. Moscow has said they are not there to help enforce the trade sanctions.

DENMARK: Allowing merchant navy vessels in gulf to act as supply ships for multinational force. Offered to fill gaps within NATO area caused by deployment of ships from other NATO nations to gulf.

ITALY: Two frigates, two corvettes and a support ship are on way.

NETHERLANDS: It has sent one air-defense frigate, and one standard frigate sailed Monday.

BELGIUM: Two mine hunters, one supply ship left for gulf last week.

AUSTRALIA: Two guided-missile frigates, a supply ship are on way.

GREECE, SPAIN: Announced Tuesday they would send ships to gulf. Along with PORTUGAL, they are allowing use of airspace or air bases or both for deployment of U.S. troops and materiel to gulf.

WEST GERMANY: Sending five minesweepers and a tender to eastern Mediterranean.

CANADA: Two destroyers and a supply ship are heading for the gulf.

EGYPT: It has sent 4,000 ground troops.

MOROCCO: 1,200 ground troops.

SYRIA: 2,000 ground troops.

PAKISTAN: Poised to send 5,000 ground troops.

BANGLADESH: Parliament on Saturday authorized sending 5,000 ground troops.

GULF COOPERATION COUNCIL (Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and until Aug. 2, Kuwait): A rapid deployment force of 10,000 troops known as the Peninsula Shield and based in northeast Saudi Arabia.
