WORLD : Court Stays Ceausescu Release
The Supreme Court today overruled a lower court’s decision to allow executed dictator Nicolae Ceausescu’s son Nicu to be released from jail for medical treatment, court officials said.
The panel of three judges from the court’s military section ruled instead that Ceausescu, 38, should be admitted under guard to a military hospital for checks to determine whether his condition would allow him to survive a prison regime.
Court officials said Ceausescu, a renowned playboy and heavy drinker, will undergo a full examination by Health Ministry doctors at a special military hospital. It was not immediately clear when he would be admitted.
A military court trying him on a charge of genocide ruled Thursday that he could leave jail for treatment of advanced cirrhosis of the liver and a varicose esophagus.
