Ellis Burks became the second player in Red Sox history--and the 25th player in major league history--to hit two home runs in one inning in Boston’s 12-4 victory over the Indians Monday night at Cleveland.

Burks, who doubled in a run in the first inning, opened the Red Sox’s fourth inning with a home run against Tom Candiotti (13-9) and capped it with a three-run home run off Colby Ward. Boston scored eight runs in the fourth inning.

Burks also singled in the ninth to finish with four hits in five at-bats as Boston won its fourth consecutive game.

Mike Boddicker (13-8) gave up a home run to Chris James with two out in the seventh to snap Boston’s 33 2/3-inning shutout streak and yield the first home run by a Boston pitcher in 96 innings.

Bill Regan was the first Red Sox player to hit two home runs in one inning, on June 16, 1928.

Milwaukee 4, Toronto 2--The Blue Jays suffered their fourth consecutive loss when B.J. Surhoff snapped a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring double in the seventh inning and Teddy Higuera (8-6) gave up only six hits at Toronto.

The loss dropped the Blue Jays five games behind the first-place Red Sox in the American League East.

The game was delayed 35-minutes in the sixth inning because swarms of gnats invaded the SkyDome.

Minnesota 7, Chicago 0--At Minneapolis, the Twins gave Allan Anderson all the support he needed to pitch his first shutout of the season, causing the White Sox to fall 5 1/2 games behind the first-place Oakland Athletics in the American League West.

Gene Larkin drove in four runs with a three-run home run and a single, and Anderson (6-16) struck out five and walked two in the third shutout of his career.

New York 4, Baltimore 0--Jesse Barfield, Matt Nokes and Roberto Kelly hit home runs, and Andy Hawkins and Dave Righetti combined to shut out the Orioles at Baltimore.

Hawkins (5-10) gave up four hits, struck out three and walked five before needing last-out help from Righetti, who earned his 28th save.

San Diego 4, Montreal 1--Joe Carter and Garry Templeton hit home runs and Ed Whitson (11-7) scattered nine hits to give the Padres a victory at Montreal, in the National League’s only game.
