South Gate : Ordinance Bans Sales From Non-Motorized Pushcarts

Share

The City Council passed an ordinance Monday making it illegal to sell anything from non-motorized pushcarts.

Council members cited health and safety concerns, saying there has been an increase this summer in street vendors selling items such as hot corn on the cob and shaved ices from pushcarts, bicycles and shopping carts.

Under the ordinance, pushcart vendors may sell on designated streets only during city-sponsored parades and must meet stringent requirements to do so.

Offenders will be issued a citation for a court hearing and their carts and goods may be impounded. The city’s 47 licensed motorized truck vendors are exempt from the ordinance.
