Farrell Urges Censure of Hotel’s S. Africa Show

Los Angeles City Councilman Robert Farrell introduced a motion Friday asking his colleagues to condemn the Century Plaza Hotel for allowing a trade show promoting tourism in South Africa to be held there, but stopped short of calling for an all-out boycott of the facility.

“I believe this is an affront to us in the community . . . it runs counter to the spirit hundreds of thousands of people showed during the recent visit of Winnie and Nelson Mandela,” said Farrell.

Farrell also called on elected officials and community groups to consider not patronizing the hotel if the tourism events are not canceled.

South Africa Airways and the South African Tourism Board will host a trade show and reception at the hotel Sept. 18, and a private touring company will host a reception there the next day. The motion will be scheduled for consideration by the council next week.
