The Assembly has granted final legislative approval to a bill to take away state tax exemptions from private social clubs that discriminate in their membership on the basis of race, sex, age, color, religion or physical disability.

A 45-31 vote sent the measure (AB 3094) by Assemblyman Johan Klehs (D-Castro Valley) to Gov. George Deukmejian’s desk. It previously passed the Senate by a 24-9 margin.

“State taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to subsidize private social clubs that they can’t join,” said Klehs, chairman of the Revenue and Taxation Committee. GOVERNOR
