WASHINGTON — Meatpacker John Morrell & Co. faces a fine of $345,125 under the 1986 immigration reform law for allegedly hiring illegal aliens and failing to verify that employees were eligible to work, the government said today.
The Immigration and Naturalization Service said the proposed fine was one of the largest against any employer since the law was passed.
The fines were levied against Morrell operations in Sioux City, Iowa, and Arkansas City, Kan. The Sioux City plant was fined $243,200 and the Arkansas City operation, a subsidiary named Ark City Packing Co., $101,925.
Under the law, employers are required to verify the work eligibility of all employees hired after Nov. 6, 1986, and to refrain from hiring people not authorized to work in the United States.
