MIAMI — Two inmates at the prison where Manuel A. Noriega is being held dodged bullets while scaling a fence and escaped in a sports car apparently left for them with the keys inside, police said.
The ousted Panamanian dictator, under constant watch by a guard posted outside his specially built cell at the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center, was not involved.
Omar Fernandez of Miami and Charles Carew of Brockton, Mass., were spotted climbing a fence Monday night, said prison spokesman Charles Davis.
Fernandez, 24, and Carew, 28, were caught separately about an hour before dawn and within about a mile of the prison, prison Lt. Thoman Litwinski said. No further details were given.
