Temple City : Limits on Terms in Office

Share

The City Council on Tuesday voted to limit city commissioners to four consecutive two-year terms and gave voters the chance to place similar limits on the terms of council members.

If approved by voters in the next municipal election in April, 1992, the measure would limit council members to two four-year terms. There are no limits on the number of terms for commissioners or council members.

Mayor Thomas Breazeal suggested the limits, saying people loose their “dynamism” after about six or 6 1/2 years. Councilman Patrick Froehle disagreed, arguing that experience and leadership take time to develop.

He voted with the rest of the council to let the voters decide on council terms but voted against limiting commissioners’ terms. The measure passed, 4 to 1.
