Pomona : Sports Complex Opposed

Citing traffic congestion and other problems, the City Council has refused to endorse a proposal by the nearby city of Fontana to build a Sports Twinplex, consisting of a 75,000-seat outdoor stadium and a 26,000-seat indoor arena.

Councilman Mark A. T. Nymeyer said he could not support a sports complex that could lead to traffic jams on weekends to go with the congestion already facing commuters on weekdays.

“We already have a massive traffic problem,” Nymeyer said. As new houses are built in the remaining open space around Pomona and Fontana, he said, “this is going to be one incredible zoo. We’ll need triple-decker highways.”

Councilman Tomas Ursua said the city should look at environmental studies before backing any proposed sports complex.
