That Settles It: Newspaper columnist and satirist Mark Shields claimed he has learned that Austrian President Kurt Waldheim had some special words for Iraq President Saddam Hussein when they met last week. Shields said Waldheim turned to Hussein and said: “Saddam, I worked for Adolf Hitler. I knew Adolf Hitler. And believe me, Saddam, you’re no Adolf Hitler.”

Blue Plate Special: Shaikha Fatima, wife of United Arab Emirates ruler Sheikh Zaid ibn Sultan an-Nahayan, donated $2.7 million in exchange for a plate of Kuwaiti food. She ate mashed eggs and sand grouse at a charity event Tuesday in Abu Dhabi for Kuwait families displaced by Iraq’s Aug. 2 invasion.

Brink of Breakthrough: A congressman will visit Christie Brinkley to see if the cover girl has figured out a way to fight Lyme disease. Brinkley believes the guinea hens on her Long Island estate are eating deer ticks, which carry the sometimes-fatal disease. Brinkley told Rep. George Hochbrueckner (D-N.Y.) the tick population dropped after she let the hens wander.

The Garbo Grab: The lawyer for Greta Garbo’s estate said Tuesday in New York dozens of people have stepped forward to claim her millions since she died in April. One person says he is both a cousin of hers and of real estate magnate Donald Trump, according to lawyer Theodore Kurz. At a court hearing, Ake Fredriksson, who claims to be her nephew, sought to overturn her legally filed will because he had been disinherited. Judge Marie Lambert reserved her decision.
