Thirty U.S. Border Patrol agents caught 100 undocumented immigrants during two sweeps of Interstate 5 near the border Tuesday night and early Wednesday.

The California Highway Patrol sealed off all of I-5 south of California 905 for the exercise, rerouting traffic to 905 and Interstate 805.

During the first sweep, at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, 33 border crossers were caught. The 12:30 a.m. Wednesday sweep apprehended 67. All were returned to Mexico.

“It went fairly well, but we didn’t catch as many as we usually do,” U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Ted Swofford said.

He said the presence of local media--which had been invited to observe--might have tipped off some border crossers who eluded the sweep.
