Howard Spira, an acknowledged gambler accused of trying to extort thousands of dollars from Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, will likely be charged with additional crimes, a federal prosecutor said today.

At a hearing in federal court in Manhattan, Assistant U.S. Atty. Gregory Kehoe expressed reluctance to the setting of a trial date for Spira, saying there was “a distinct chance” the case would be presented again to a federal grand jury for additional criminal charges.

Kehoe did not specify what other charges would be sought.
