Western Digital to Make 2.5-Inch Disk Drives

The Irvine-based electronics firm said it will produce a pair of 2.5-inch intelligent disk drives for laptop computers. The announcement marks an expansion by the firm in its largest computer-products market. Volume production of the disk drives will begin in the first quarter of 1991, a quarter earlier than originally projected, said spokesman Robert Blair. The drives will compete with products from Connor Peripherals Inc. and Toshiba Corp., but Blair said the drives will feature a unique adaptive cache, a component that speeds the flow of data from the memory drive to the central processing unit.
