Nakamichi Corp., a $260-million Japanese company known for its audio equipment, has formed a holding company to oversee its growing computer peripherals business. The new company, Nakamichi Peripherals Corp., will move to its Cypress headquarters on Oct. 1.

It will take over responsibilities for four California subsidiaries, which were acquired or established in the last two years, from its Torrance affiliate, Nakamichi USA. The subsidiaries are Mass Optical Storage Technologies Inc., which will move from Lake Forest to Cypress; MT Holding Co. in Scotts Valley; Mountain Network Solutions Inc. and OCEAN Microsystems in Campbell.

Yasuhiro Yamazaki, president of Nakamichi USA and president of the new holding company, said given the company’s edge in magnetic and optical recording technologies, the move was “a logical diversification.” Nakamichi Peripherals’ expansion was made possible through a $10-million investment from Nissho-Iwai Corp., one of Japan’s largest trading and manufacturing companies.
