U.S. OKs Money for Pacoima Center
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has authorized funding for a community center in the San Fernando Gardens housing development in Pacoima, Los Angeles City Councilman Ernani Bernardi’s office announced Thursday.
The balance of the project’s $941,000 cost is being funded through loans and grants from the Community Development Department and money from the councilman’s discretionary fund.
“There have been difficulties and obstacles in moving this project forward,” Bernardi said. “Having the full funding needed on hand is a major milestone.”
The community center will house job-training and placement programs, classes in English and literacy, and scouting and senior citizen activities. Construction is expected to begin by March and will take six to nine months, according to Joseph Shuldiner, executive director of the city Housing Authority.
More than 2,000 people live in the project at 10995 Lehigh Ave., which was built in 1955.
