NATION : U.S. OKs 7% Rise in Air Fares

WASHINGTON —
The Transportation Department gave the go-ahead today for airlines to charge 7% more for most international flights beginning next week to cover skyrocketing fuel costs.
The department also said airlines could apply for permission to charge a war-risk surcharge to meet the rising costs of insurance amid the vast military buildup in the Middle East.
The price rises will take effect Oct. 1 and last for six months.
