The Public Library topped off its summer reading program with parties for 19 groups of children who successfully completed the reading requirements.

More than 3,000 children participated in the eight-week program, and 52,000 books were reported on.

Directing the summer activities were Bonnie Weber, head of children’s services; Patti Beck, Whittwood Branch children’s librarian, and Ivonne Arreola, children’s librarian. They were assisted by 12 staff members and 200 youth volunteers.

At the “Read to Me” parties, toddlers were treated to puppet shows and clown skits, and at “Reading Round-Up” parties, children were deputized by “Wyatt Earp,” taken for a ride in a “stagecoach,” and led through a mine tunnel to look for “silver.”

Parties were funded by the Friends of the Whittier Public Library to promote literacy and an early start on a lifetime reading habit. The Whittier Public Library is at 7344 S. Washington Ave.
