CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : BAKERSFIELD : Fire Closes Highway

A refinery fire visible more than 10 miles away forced evacuation of 10 people and closure of California 99 through Bakersfield for three hours. Kern County firefighters said a broken seal in the pump of a vacuum tower apparently sparked the fire that engulfed the facility at San Joaquin Refining Co.
