UNDER THE UPLIFT

Re Georgia Jones-Davis’ edifying “Storytellers” of Aug. 19:

The chapter headings, as well as the title, of Thomas Tryon’s “The Wings of Morning” are the titles of popular “uplifting” prints that Victorians displayed in their homes, hiding the “artistic” nudes in secret desk drawers, false-front books and bookcases or behind those same prints.

As for the “10th-Century art of Ishinpo” in Sidney Sheldon’s “Memories of Midnight,” it must be a reference to a real or imagined Japanese period of innovation in painting.

As I used to tell my children when they would try to pick my brain as an easy route to homework, “What am I, an encyclopedia?”
