PLATFORM : Saving Babies

We are concentrating on South-Central, Southwest and Southeast Los Angeles, Inglewood, Compton, Pasadena and Long Beach because the infant-mortality rates are highest in these areas. Inadequate prenatal care and substance abuse stand out as critical factors contributing to the situation in Los Angeles County. This problem is probably the most critical affecting the county today.

We did a survey of 300 women before we started the project and discovered that women have a lot of misinformation about prenatal care. Many were not aware of what it is. Others stated that they did not have good experiences when they had it. They had questions about what physicians do during the examinations. This is the only campaign, to our knowledge, directed toward African-Americans, but that is where (education) is most needed. There are too many black babies born too soon, and they are dying at alarming rates. We have sought funding from businesses and others but thus far we have received no favorable responses.
