‘Heavy-Duty Anger’ Heats Up

Share

At first I thought the article “Heavy-Duty Anger” was going to be enlightening. However, my excitement was quickly dampened by the comment only four paragraphs into the article. This was in reference to a statement by one of the women who complained about her husband’s lack of involvement in household chores aside from bathing the dog. “That’s probably more than lots of other men do for the women in their lives,” the writer wrote.

This is exactly the kind of comment that perpetuates the stereotype that women are exclusively responsible for the household. Why is it when a man does something around the house, he is doing his wife a favor? After all, it is also his house, his dog, his children, his yard. They are just as much his responsibility as hers.

Sure, women are free to have a career (and often have to work outside the home.) But, is it fair that when they walk in the front door, they have to face another full-time job?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all men’s fault. Women perpetuate the problem by taking it all on. But, it is time we stop looking at this unequal division of labor as a minor character flaw and recognize it as a serious social dilemma. I believe that a change in attitudes is vital to healthy family relationships in the future.
