Sony May Build Macintosh Portable: Apple Computer may ask Sony to produce an inexpensive notebook-computer version of the Macintosh, the New York Times reported. If the talks between Apple and Sony lead to such an agreement, it would be a change in Apple’s manufacturing strategy. So far, the company has built all of its computers itself. Apple’s leadership has concluded that the Cupertino, Calif.-based company lacks the skills at miniaturization needed to produce a lightweight notebook machine, the Times said. The portable is considered vital in Japan, where Apple has little presence, and increasingly important in the United States.
