Sanford L. Kane, former head of the aborted U.S. Memories semiconductor venture, has been named president and chief executive of Chatsworth-based PCO Inc.

PCO, a joint venture between Corning Inc. and International Business Machines, manufactures optoelectronic interfaces, a key component in the operation of fiber optic technology used in telecommunications and other applications.

The appointment of Kane, 48, “will assist the firm as it drives toward achieving higher volume manufacturing levels, developing a mainline portfolio and expanding support for key customers,” PCO said.

Kane, a longtime IBM executive, had most recently been chief executive and president of U.S. Memories, a venture to manufacture advanced dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips that was aborted after gaining insufficient financial support from semiconductor firms.
