Two men on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to murder charges in the shooting death of a 61-year-old man as he waited for a bus in West Covina.
Lucien A. Martin, 19, of Ontario, and Paul S. Watkins, 22, of Los Angeles, also pleaded not guilty to one count each of attempted robbery and robbery at their Municipal Court arraignment. The two also pleaded not guilty to a special circumstance allegation of murder during an attempted robbery. The charge qualifies them for a death sentence.
They were ordered held without bail pending a bail review hearing.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Gary Hearnsberger said the slaying occurred July 19 as the suspects, driving a stolen pickup, passed by Raymond Shield, 61, of West Covina, and his family waiting for a shuttle bus.
