When is “Driving Miss Daisy” going to run out of gas? The makers of the movies that have been vainly chasing “Miss Daisy” on the Billboard magazine rental chart since August would love to know. They’d like a chance to rule the rental chart, but none have had enough drawing power to unseat the queen--”Miss Daisy.” “Born on the Fourth of July,” which has No. 1 potential, is still trailing in the No. 2 spot. The question is, will “Born” run out of steam before “Miss Daisy” runs out of gas? Tune in next week. Disney’s “Peter Pan” flitted onto the rental chart at No. 17. But, retailing for $24.99 and often discounted down around $15, “Peter Pan” will do much better in the sales market.

* “Born on the Fourth of July” hasn’t had any luck driving “Miss Daisy” out of the top spot, but another kind of war movie might just do it. “Glory,” which is about a black regiment in the Civil War, entered the chart at No. 6. Because the PBS “Civil War” TV series did so well last week, there’s probably heightened interest among many renters in an acclaimed movie dealing with that war.
