P.M. BRIEFING : Fee Studied for Chicago Airport
Rep. Dan Rostenkowski (D-Ill.) reportedly is prepared to promote an airline passenger fee to help fund a third major airport in the Chicago area, a published report said today.
The Chicago congressman, who chairs the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, has told his staff to develop a plan to route the fee through his tax-writing panel if Sen. Wendell H. Ford (D-Ky.) fails to get the measure through the Senate, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
The newspaper quoted sources as saying the airline passenger fee proposal is to be attached to budget legislation needed to avert massive government layoffs and widespread program cuts.
Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley has been lobbying heavily for the fee, which could be applied to passengers at O’Hare International and Midway airports, as a means of funding his proposed Lake Calumet airport, one of five sites under consideration by a joint Illinois-Indiana committee.
