Blue Jays Fall After Learning of Red Sox Win
There were no thrown chairs, no tears, no grumbling. The Toronto Blue Jays accepted their fate with dignity.
Five minutes after the Blue Jays learned via the scoreboard that they had been eliminated from the American League East race, they lost to the Baltimore Orioles, 3-2, on Mickey Tettleton’s home run with two out in the ninth off reliever Tom Henke.
“I’d be lying if I said my heart didn’t go down when I saw we had no chance, but professionalism took over and I wanted to win,” Henke said. “I’m not going to hang my head. I did my best all year.”
Oriole reliever Gregg Olson (6-5) got Fred McGriff to fly out with two runners on base and two out in the top of the ninth.
John Olerud hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead, but the Orioles tied it in their half.
