Chinese Diver, 14, Surprises World Champ

A 14-year-old Chinese boy upset his world champion teammate today for an Asian Games platform diving gold medal.

Sun Shuwei edged 16-year-old teammate Xiong Ni, the 1989 World Cup champion, by 2.28 points for the men’s gold.

Sun went ahead on the ninth of 10 dives, when his somersaulting won him one perfect 10 and six 9.5s from the seven judges, giving him a total of 94.05 points for the dive.

Xiong came back with an 89.28 on his last dive, and Sun needed 69.12 to win. Sun finished with a 71.40, giving him 690.93 to Xiong’s 688.65. Japan’s Keita Kaneto won the bronze with 571.74.

Indonesia won its second gold medal of the Games, in women’s tennis doubles, but otherwise the Chinese and South Koreans divided up the day’s nine golds. China won two in diving, one in men’s tennis doubles and two in the Chinese martial art of wushu, pushing its gold medal total to 160.
