Canada Says NutraSweet Is Monopoly: Canada’s Competition Tribunal ruled that U.S.-owned NutraSweet has unfairly locked up the market for the artificial sweetener aspartame. The case was brought by Tosoh Corp. of Japan, which hopes to compete with the subsidiary of Monsanto Co. of St. Louis. The tribunal invalidated supply contracts requiring customers to purchase all of their aspartame from NutraSweet. It also prohibited NutraSweet from offering discounts to encourage customers to buy only from NutraSweet, which has more than 95% of the Canadian market.
