Their Graduation Is One for the Books

The Huntington Beach Library’s adult literacy services graduated 31 basic reading tutors from the Literacy Volunteers of America basic reading tutor training workshop.

They are J. Douglas Barr, Donna Cowen, Adele Grizzard, Suzan Kiefer, Dana McMahon, Rosemary McMaster, Stanley Mittelman, Sally Murphy, Linda Nash, Maureen O’Reilly, Cherie Phillips, Rochele Rothschild, Kathy Steinhaus, Jeffrey Towne, Denise Waller, Kevin Wrathall and Leonard Zusman, all from Huntington Beach.

Others are Arlene Adams, Sheri Castro, Kathy Douglas, Julie Guiso, Brigitte Le, Laura Rascop and George Truong, from Fountain Valley; Melissa Bolling and Wilma Gregory, of Seal Beach; Laura Hansen and Ruth Hoff, of Westminster; Greg Kryder, Newport Beach; Prabha Triverdi of Garden Grove and Margo Vaughn of Orange.

Cal State Fullerton seniors Rich Ascroft and Kim Swatton have become members of the international touring company of the Broadway musical “Sophisticated Ladies.”

They and other cast members have started a five-month tour of Europe that will take them to Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Austria.

Irvine resident Lewis J. Green has been elected president of the Orange County Chapter of UCLA’s Anderson Management Alumni Assn.

Karen M. Baytosh, of Orange and a senior at Cal Poly Pomona, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Ford Motor Co./U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Endowed Scholarship Program.

Trina Bruno of Huntington Beach won the top merit scholarship awarded to incoming freshmen at the 150-member all-girl Cornelia Connelly School of the Holy Child in Anaheim.

Bruno was awarded a $2,000 scholarship, and Bianca Wojcik of Tustin was given a $1,000 grant.

Anisha Patel of Cypress, Julie Chang of Huntington Beach, Varci Vartanian of Downey and Mary Ferguson of Garden Grove were given $500 awards.

Ruby and Golvin Street of Leisure World in Laguna Hills celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a party attended by family members at the Dana Point Resort Hotel. The Streets have three children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Kelly Thompson, 15, of El Toro has been named a semifinalist in TEEN magazine’s 1991 Miss Teen-age America program and will appear in the magazine’s January, 1991, issue.

She is one of 40 semifinalists from an original 10,000 entries of girls 13 through 18. Twelve finalists will be selected for final judging in Los Angeles in February.

The winner will receive a $15,000 college scholarship.

James W. Casper and Michael C. McGroarty, both of La Habra and both Sonora High School students, were honored at a Court of Honor recognizing their advancement to the rank of Boy Scout Eagle.

Each served leadership roles in projects that benefited the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

As a coordinator for a walk-a-thon that included 200 walkers, Michael helped raise $27,000. James served as chairman for a bowling campaign that raised $12,500 from the 200 participating bowlers.
