It may seem like a throwback to the days of barn-raisings, cornhuskings and covered wagons, but the good people of the Wandering Foot Quilt Guild believe their craft has modern day appeal as well.

So this Saturday, they’re putting nearly 80 handmade quilts on the auction block in Sierra Madre.

The guild, founded five years ago by devotees of the precise stitching and intricate patterns that characterize quilting, has 100 members and several on its waiting list. Women from all over the San Gabriel and Pomona valleys attend monthly quilting lectures and hands-on quilting parties. So far, there are no men in the guild, which is named for a quilt pattern.

Guild member Betty Gagne said quilts at last year’s auction were sold for between $25 and $800. This year, works by professional quilter Marge Eakins of La Puente will probably bring the top prices at the auction, Gagne said. Eakins’ Carolina Lily pattern quilt won three top awards in a recent guild competition.

The quilters’ products will be auctioned off Saturday at the Sierra Madre Methodist Church, 695 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., between 1 p.m and 5 p.m. with the proceeds to go to charity. The doors will open at noon for viewing of the quilts and a boutique sale, which is free to the public.

Other old-fashioned events are being held this week during Azusa’s Golden Days, held annually to mark the city’s founding. It will feature a Mexican fiesta dinner at 5 p.m. Tuesday, a talent show at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, a bingo night at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and a sister city reception for the Mexican city of Zacatecas at 7 p.m. Friday. All the events will be at the Azusa Woman’s Club at 10th Street and Azusa Avenue.

The culmination of the Golden Days celebration is on Saturday, starting with a $4-a-person pancake breakfast at the Elks Lodge, 621 N. Virginia Ave. Then, the Golden Days parade, with a Western theme, will march down San Gabriel Boulevard at 11 a.m. and a city festival will follow at 5 p.m. at the St. Francis of Rome Parish Hall, 402 N.
