Panel to Consider Homeless Shelter

Share

A 16-bed shelter for homeless families may be opened in Ventura by early December if it is approved by the city’s Planning Commission.

The Ventura City Council agreed last Monday that there are no environmental reasons to hinder Project Understanding, a nonprofit service organization, from opening a new shelter in a vacant pharmacy in the 1200 block of North Ventura Avenue.

The proposal now goes to the Planning Commission, which is scheduled to act on the application Tuesday. Construction should take about a month, said Rick Pearson, executive director of Project Understanding.

The organization has operated a 20-bed family shelter on Laurel Street in Ventura from mid-November through March for the past two years.
