Intel Introduces New Product: Intel Corp. introduced a new type of memory system for portable personal computers that it says is lighter, more durable and far more energy efficient than traditional disk drives. The new flash memory card is about the size of a credit card and has no moving parts, instead relying on special memory chips. It will be available to personal computer manufacturers in December in 1-megabyte and 4-megabyte versions, and an Intel spokesman said a 16-megabyte version should be available next year. The card could reduce the weight of portable computers by several pounds and increase battery life by ten to 100 times, Intel said, though the card has much less capacity than a hard disk drive and costs more.
