OSLO : The Prize for Peace
It’s Nobel season, and next Monday is the day for the biggest Nobel of all, the prize for doing the most to bring peace to the world.
As usual, there is widespread speculation but no agreement on the likeliest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev and Czechoslovak President Vaclav Havel are considered front-runners this year, according to Nobel-watchers. Other likely candidates, they say, are South African black activist Nelson Mandela and Chai Ling, a leader of the 1989 student movement for democratic reform in China. The 1989 award was made to the Dalai Lama for his peaceful struggle against China’s occupation of Tibet.
There has been speculation that the Nobel Committee may choose to withhold the prize this year as the Persian Gulf crisis deepens.
