Panel Backs Houses on Warner Ridge Site

A Los Angeles City Council panel Tuesday voted unanimously and without debate to recommend approval of an ordinance permitting only single-family houses to be built on the controversial Warner Ridge property.

The action of the council’s Planning and Land Use Management Committee is part of Councilwoman Joy Picus’ design to thwart plans for commercial development of the 21.5-acre site by the Spound Co. and its partner, Johnson Wax Development Co.

However, the success of Picus’ plan appears to rest with the courts. In that arena, the Picus plan has met several disappointments. Last month, a Superior Court judge ordered the city to zone the property to permit commercial development.

Despite that setback, Picus has proceeded with her plans to permit only residential development on the much-disputed Warner Ridge site in the hopes that last month’s court ruling will be overturned on appeal. The city attorney’s office has appealed that decision.
