SEAL BEACH : Officials Cancel Naval Open House

Share

An open house at the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station planned for Saturday will not be held because officials decided spending the money for it would be “inappropriate” with the federal government budget strife.

Capt. Stephen T. Holl, base commander, also announced Wednesday that the offer of visits aboard the Navy frigate and the Coast Guard cutter and helicopter, which was to be extended during the open house, has been rescinded.

They are now “unavailable because of cutbacks due to the federal budget crisis,” added Tom Thomas, spokesman for the 5,000-acre ammunition depot.

The all-day open house was to be in celebration of the Navy’s 215th anniversary and of the city of Seal Beach’s 75th birthday. Tours of ammunition and naval ordnance displays were also to be offered.
