WORLD : U.S. Quarters in Bolivia Bombed
Leftist guerrillas bombed a U.S. Marine residence, killing one Bolivian policeman and wounding another. Police said three Marines were slightly injured, but American officials said they escaped unharmed.
The attack Wednesday night occurred as several other bombs went off in the capital, including one that destroyed a monument to President John F. Kennedy, said U.S. Embassy spokesman Bruce Wharton.
A group calling itself the Nestor Paz Zamora Commando claimed responsibility for the attack on the Marine residence and the other bombings, in telephone calls to a Roman Catholic radio station. The group was previously unknown.
The attacks came a week after the government denounced an alleged plot by cocaine traffickers to assassinate U.S. Ambassador Robert S. Gelbard, President Jaime Paz Zamora and other ranking officials.
