COUNTYWIDE : Board to Consider Jail Site Rezoning
- Share via
The County Board of Supervisors will consider a zoning change and an amendment to the General Plan on Tuesday to make way for a new jail near Todd Road and the Santa Paula Freeway.
In July, the supervisors chose the Todd Road location near Santa Paula from among five spots in the county. The 157-acre site is now a lemon orchard.
A new jail is needed, county officials said, because the existing jail at the county government center in Ventura is overcrowded. The first phase of the proposed complex will cover about 15 acres and house 752 inmates, said Robert Brateman, county jail project coordinator. Construction will take slightly more than three years.
The cost is estimated at $51 million, he said. State funds will total $31 million and the rest will come from local funds. When the complex is finished, it will house 2,306 inmates and cover 40 to 45 acres.
The Planning Commission recommended approval of the rezoning and the General Plan amendment on Sept. 27.
