6 to Receive UCI’s Highest Honor at Ceremony for 25th Anniversary

Roger Johnson and Murray Krieger, both of Laguna Beach; Mary Roosevelt of Corona del Mar; Elizabeth and Thomas Tierney of Santa Ana Heights, and Thomas Yuen of Newport Beach have been selected to receive UC Irvine’s highest honor, the UCI Medal.

Each has been a major contributor and supporter of the university and will be recognized Friday during a ceremony marking the university’s 25th anniversary.

The medal, created in 1984 and so far awarded 13 times, is UCI’s version of an honorary degree.

UC Irvine freshmen Kyrissa de St. Paer, Leonel Arellano and Chuong Nguyen, and UCLA sophomore Jeremy Rosthler, all of Laguna Hills have been awarded $3,500 scholarships from the Costa Mesa-based Stanley Behrens Foundation.

Jeff McCombs, a 1990 graduate of Laguna Hills High School, has won $1,000 and a spot in “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.” McCombs is one of 65 students in the nation to receive financial help from the Who’s Who publishers. McCombs, who attends USC, was the captain of the Orange County Academic Decathlon team, which last year finished second in the nation.

San Clemente resident Larry Solomon, a mail carrier for the Mission Viejo community who was cited for his “customer satisfaction” attitude, was presented the first Service Excellence Award by AIM Mail Centers in conjunction with the Mission Viejo Post Office and the U.S. Postal Service. AIM is a postal franchise firm.

New graduates of Saddleback College’s paramedic program are Arthur B. Andres, Robert L. Glenn and Douglas H. Mitchell, all of Mission Viejo; Randall G. Anno, Laguna Hills; Terrence A. Gorgen, El Toro; James C. Huff and David S. Smith, San Juan Capistrano; John W. Mullin, San Clemente; Kirk A. Grant and Robert E. Stuart, Fountain Valley; Craig A. Wilkinson, Garden Grove; David L. Hoff, Costa Mesa; William M. Moss, Santa Ana, and Dennis J. Marinello, Cypress.

Corona del Mar resident Penny Baskin, an advertising specialties promotional consultant, was awarded the prestigious Bronze Pyramid by Specialty Advertising Assn. International at its 32nd Golden Bronze Pyramid competition.

Baskin, 37, a Corona del Mar High School graduate and a worker for Walter W. Cribbins Co. in Santa Ana, was honored for her anniversary promotion for a medical corporation.

Andranie Maissain, Roy Runas, Jimmy Rungthirakul, Albert Tom and David Tom, the top players in the Chess for Juniors Club in Garden Grove, have been named to play a match against the top young Soviet chess players in Leningrad in July, 1991.

The club is attempting to raise $12,000 to pay for the trip, according to chess coach and trainer Robert M. Snyder.
