Spectroscopy Award: A Beckman Instruments scientist will receive an award for his research in spectroscopy, the study of the interaction of light with matter.

Robert J. Obremski, manager of the physical chemistry section in applied research and advanced development for Beckman’s Brea division, will be awarded the Williams-Wright award next March in Chicago. The award is given by the Coblenz Society for research in molecular spectroscopy in an industrial setting. Given annually, it recognizes both specific discoveries and applications and collective work and research.

“In my case, the award was given for my work over the years,” Obremski said.

Obremski, 49, was singled out for his work in developing computers and programs to detect the presence of matter in increasingly smaller amounts. Spectroscopy determines what a given material is and how much is present. Oil and pharmaceutical companies use this technology.
