The Bush Administration offered up to $4 million Monday for information leading to the frustration of terrorist activity or the arrest and prosecution of perpetrators, doubling the pool of reward money as part of a new campaign.

Secretary of State James A. Baker III will kick off the new campaign today with a ceremony in the department’s ornate formal dining room. In addition to the reward money, Baker will unveil several new television public service announcements to urge the public to help combat terrorism.

State Department spokeswoman Margaret Tutwiler said that contributions of $1 million each from the Airline Pilots’ Assn. and the Air Transport Assn. were added to the existing U.S. government reward pool.

So far, no one has received anything close to the maximum reward. Only a little more than $500,000 has been awarded. Most of that money went to individuals who provided information leading to the arrest, prosecution and conviction last year of Fawaz Younis, a member of the Amal militia in Lebanon, on charges of hijacking a Jordanian airliner in 1985.
