General Electric Co.: The manufacturing, communications and financial conglomerate said third-quarter net income jumped 9% to $1.02 billion on sales that rose 9.2% to $14.2 billion. The Fairfield, Conn., company said its aircraft-engine business was particularly strong, with orders up 13% over last year.
