Clorox Co.: The Oakland-based maker of household bleach, cleaning products and paints posted first-quarter profit of $39.4 million, down 14% from year-earlier figures. Sales totaled $403 million, up 10%. The results were attributed to the acquisition of the Pine-Sol cleaner and Combat insecticide lines in August, a general slowdown in grocery store sales and continued higher levels of new product and promotional spending.
