From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Brian Peter Daniels, believed to be one of the world’s major drug kingpins, responsible for shipping vast amounts of Asian marijuana to the United States over a 12-year period, was given a 25-year prison sentence and fined $6.2 million in federal court in Seattle. Daniels, 44, a wealthy New York native who lived for 15 years in Bangkok, Thailand, was alleged to have built a smuggling empire that included extensive contacts with drug lords in the northeast provinces of Thailand and with Hong Kong’s secretive banking system. He was charged in San Diego, Seattle and Nevada with trying to smuggle 150 tons of Thai marijuana worth $550 million into the United States in 1988.
