NATION IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Encephalitis Death Increases Toll to 3
A third death was confirmed in an outbreak of St. Louis encephalitis, a disease carried by mosquitoes that has spread to 18 Florida counties, health officials in Tallahassee, Fla., said. A 69-year-old man who died Oct. 13 was a victim of encephalitis, bringing to three the total deaths in the outbreak. Tests were also performed to determine whether a 91-year-old man who died Monday was a victim of the disease, but officials said results were incomplete. A total of 46 cases have been confirmed statewide. Because encephalitis is carried by mosquitoes that prefer to bite after dark, health officials have urged people to wear long clothing when going out at night.
